We were approached by a young, growing family looking to create a heart to the family home. The house is a common Victorian terrace, but is carefully tailored to its own and surrounding environment.
We principally added a part side extension with courtyard garden, and a part rear extension creating a more ‘broken plan’ internal layout. The design process navigated neighbouring sensitivities whilst shaping the building in search of daylight and sunlight throughout the day.
L-shaped glazing to the rear extension provides both aspect to the garden and a means to capture sunlight on its path. The external courtyard provides light and ventilation to the deeper areas of the house. Sloped roof glazing above the kitchen illuminates the space whilst extending views towards the sky. The architecture and interiors are classic with contemporary twists. This is reflected in the material palette which borrows from the original house with London stock brickwork with elements of high thermally performing glazing and black zinc detailing.
